Mouse models for human diseases
Certain characteristics of laboratory mice may resemble human diseases. Mice can therefore serve as models for medical research. Life Scientists in Zurich have established a large number of mouse models.
Diabetes: an autoimmune disease
Autoimmune diseases arise when the body’s immune defense overreacts and attacks the own body. This is the case for transgenic mice that develop diabetes type I.
Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease
This neurological dysfunction develops when nerves of the peripheral nervous system are damaged. The disease is characterized by muscle weakness and wasting as well as loss of sensation in the extremities of the body.
