Life Science Zurich Graduate School
The Life Science Zurich Graduate School, a common initiative of the University of Zurich and the ETH Zurich, was officially founded in December 2005. The nine programs of the graduate school offer an excellent education in order to attract promising young scientists from all over the world.
Students with a Master's degree from a university in the field of Natural Sciences can apply online twice a year, July 1 or December 1, for the different programs. The graduate school then invites qualified candidates to Zurich for interviews. This offers students the opportunity to decide which research group suits them best and at the same time gives the responsible researchers the possibility to choose his or her favorite applicant. The aim is to find first choice jobs for as many persons as possible.
Applicants accepted into a program are expected to submit their thesis within three to four years. During this period the thesis committee evaluates the progress of the research project and supports and advises the student.
Besides working on a research project, each PhD student has to attend specific courses offered by his PhD program. To enable the young scientists to present their results to their peers each PhD program organizes an annual retreat. In contrast, courses which are of interest to all 600 students of the graduate school, so called ‚transferable skill courses’, i.e. scientific writing, project management, ethics or statistics are coordinated by the graduate school. Thanks to these courses young researchers are also able to acquire non-scientific qualifications for their future career. At the same time contacts can be made with colleagues from other research areas. Creating a broad scientific network can be beneficial for a future career both in research and in the industry.

The ETH Zurich is preparing a concept for a standardized graduate school at the ETH of Zurich. The concept plans to include Master students in the graduate school and proposes a system with only few guidelines. The LSZ graduate school and the graduate school in Mathematics will serve as well functioning examples for the realization.

Video clips with Erica Bogan
Erica Bogan grew up in Costa Rica and speaks Spanish fluently. In the interview, however, she answers effortlessly in German and English! Even though at the moment she spends 10 to 12 hours a day in the lab, she is not yet sure about her future in hard-core research. What other possibilities are there? See for yourself in the video clips with Erica.
