One of the most astounding biological processes is the development of a complex multi-cellular organism from the seemingly simple beginnings of a fertilized egg. Now scientists at the University of Zurich are finding ways to forge the growing understanding of the underlying molecular events into possible treatments against cancer.
What flies tell us about cancer
At least half of our population develops a colorectal tumor by the age of seventy. The observation that a gene involved in the wingless signaling pathway is mutated in 80% of human colorectal cancer patients opened new ways of understanding it.
