A day in the life of Thomas Kramps
30 The amplified genetic material is cleaned and stored in the freezer for later experiments.
00 Thomas usually has his lunch at the "mensa" with friends from the lab.
00 Thomas selects a glass tube with flies from an earlier injection experiment in the culture room.
05 As the injected DNA contains an additional gene affecting eye color, he can see whether his attempt to generate transgenic lines successful.
45 A friend tells Thomas about an interesting conference coming up in summer.
15 The yeasts in these dishes are used to determine interactions between proteins. They are stored in the 4°C cold-room.
50 For the interaction experiment yeast colonies are copied to indicator dishes using a sterile velvet stamp. The yeasts are then incubated to grow at their preferred temperature of 30°C.
15 The experimental work is done for the day.
12 After spending some time scanning the international literature for new developments in his research area and planning the experiments for the coming day, Thomas is finally on his way home.
