Thomas arrives at the Institute for Molecular Biology, with a busy day ahead. |
| 9:00 |
As a first thing in the morning, he starts a PCR reaction to amplify a piece of the Drosophila genome. This will be used in a transformation experiment. |
| 9:20 |
After starting the reaction there is time for checking e-mails. |

Thomas and his colleague Denise Nellen prepare flies for injecting DNA to generate transgenic fly lines. |
| 10:00 |
The transgenic flies are generated by injecting synthetic DNA with a very fine glass needle into embryos under a microscope. Some of the injected embryos integrate the DNA into the genome of their germ cells, and thereby pass it on to their progeny. |

New results are presented and discussed in a weekly group meeting. |
