A day in the life of Thomas Kramps

Thomas Kramps,
graduate student in the laboratory of Professor K. Basler, University of Zurich

8:50 Thomas arrives at the Institute for Molecular Biology, with a busy day ahead.
9:00 As a first thing in the morning, he starts a PCR reaction to amplify a piece of the Drosophila genome. This will be used in a transformation experiment.
9:20 After starting the reaction there is time for checking e-mails.
9:30 Thomas and his colleague Denise Nellen prepare flies for injecting DNA to generate transgenic fly lines.
10:00 The transgenic flies are generated by injecting synthetic DNA with a very fine glass needle into embryos under a microscope. Some of the injected embryos integrate the DNA into the genome of their germ cells, and thereby pass it on to their progeny.
11:00 New results are presented and discussed in a weekly group meeting.
12:00 Professor Basler and Thomas discuss recent progress and new strategies for his ongoing projects.
